Sometimes, technology that’s unreliable is worse than no technology at all. This entrant into our technology makeover contest laments a finicky wireless network, hit-or-miss antivirus protection, and computers that may (or may not) fail at any moment…
“Our in-store system is a hybrid of a ‘new’ computer network that runs our POS system and a 12 year old HP that is running on its last leg. We also have a HP printer that is supposedly ‘networked’ with all of our computers but will only communicate with one. Our wireless works if you’re in the same room, only with certain devices and if it’s the fifth Wednesday of the month.
IT security? You mean our antivirus software is running, right? We have it on all of our computers, but even that doesn’t stop the occasional infection and the system runs s-l-o-w. At one point we even installed Microsoft Security Essentials to remove a known threat. Now that seems to hog the systems’ ability to run smoothly.
So right now we’re waiting for the computer we use for purchasing and bookkeeping to die, we have a printer ‘network’ that doesn’t work, and a wireless system that’s no better than two cans on a string.”
