It has a large technology team, outside advisors, and a new headquarters moving from Pawtucket, RI to the Boston Seaport in January, 2027. But last March, it was hit by a cyberattack, and new details released over the past month show how the attackers got in, how long recovery took, and what it cost.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Though operating on a far smaller scale, I think the lessons learned apply directly to the firms I work with in Newton, Waltham, and across Greater Boston. In a notice filed with Massachusetts regulators in late August, the company said the attack came from a &#8220;vishing and social engineering campaign.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Vishing is the industry term for voice phishing, where instead of a suspicious email, someone calls seeking company information. They may sound like a coworker in a different department, a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cmitsolutions.com\/boston-ma-1020\/it-procurement\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">vendor<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, or the IT help desk itself. They ask for a password, a login code, or a quick reset. Nothing gets hacked the way it might be depicted in a movie, someone with their guard down is simply talked into opening the door.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Here is what Hasbro&#8217;s own filings and the Boston Business Journal report show:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hasbro brought in outside<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cmitsolutions.com\/boston-ma-1020\/cybersecurity\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">cybersecurity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, forensic, incident response, and ransomware response specialists.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">It took its primary<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cmitsolutions.com\/boston-ma-1020\/cloud-services\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">data center<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> offline until it could be completely rebuilt.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While systems were restored, it processed orders by hand at a reduced rate.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">About a week after the first breach, a separate attacker used gathered information to get into an employee account.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Social Security numbers, financial account numbers, card numbers, and driver&#8217;s license information for 436 Massachusetts residents were exposed.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Normal order processing, shipping, and invoicing did not return until June 28, about three months after the attack.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hasbro has reported nearly $11 million in direct costs and about $25 million in lost revenue. A class action lawsuit was also filed in federal court in April.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Hasbro did a lot of things right. It had a<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/cmitsolutions.com\/boston-ma-1020\/blog\/business-continuity-is-a-local-priority-why-disaster-recovery-plans-matter\/\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">response plan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, it acted quickly, and it had experts to call on. Opening the front door is often just a phone call away<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Firewalls and email filters matter. They do not answer the phone. The simplest habit I recommend is\u2014if someone calls asking for a password, a login code, a reset, or a change to payment details, hang up and<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400\">call back on a number you already know<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">. A real colleague will not mind. Neither will a real vendor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The same rule belongs at the help desk.
