One of the easiest ways to keep information secure is to keep software and apps updated. This Cybersecurity Awareness Month, we\u2019re teaching others to step away from the \u201cremind me later\u201d button to stay one step ahead of cybercriminals. A 2020 report from Positive Technologies<\/a><\/span> tells us that almost one-third of detected threats involve software exploit attempts. These are the only tricks you\u2019ll want this October:<\/p>\n

1 – UPDATE OFTEN.<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

Always keep your software updated when updates become available and don\u2019t delay. These updates fix general software problems and provide new security patches where criminals might get in. You can be sure the bad guys are always looking for new ways to get your data through software, so staying updated is an easy way to stay ahead.<\/p>\n

2 – GET IT FROM THE SOURCE.<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

When downloading a software update, only get it from the company that created it. Never use a hacked, pirated, or unlicensed versions of software (even if your friend gave it to you). These often contain malware<\/a> <\/span>and cause more problems than they solve.<\/p>\n

3 – MAKE IT AUTOMATIC.<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

Software from legitimate companies usually provides an option to update your software automatically. When there\u2019s an update available, it gives a reminder so you can easily start the process. If you can\u2019t automatically update it, remind yourself to check quarterly if an update is available.<\/p>\n

4 – WATCH FOR FAKES!<\/strong><\/span><\/h5>\n

Maybe you\u2019ve seen these pop-up windows when visiting a website or opening software that urgently asks you to download something or fill out a form? These are always fake and should not be followed. A browser will only warn you not to move forward or stay on a specific web address because it might not be secured, or it could contain malware.<\/p>\n
