The Wall Street Journal put out an article that stated that small businesses are unprepared for the current cybersecurity threats facing them. As a matter of fact, over 50% or roughly around 50% have no plan at all to deal with the cybersecurity threat. Most business owners feel stuck in indecision, not knowing what to do. Hi, I’m Steve Conyers with CMIT solutions, and I have some guidance for you on how to get unstuck and get started analyzing your potential risks from a cybersecurity attack against your small business. So the first thing to know is that you read about things that happen to businesses in the newspaper, and you start thinking, well, that’s going to happen to me. Like I’m going to have all my files, encrypted, and I am going to have to pay this huge ransom. And the next day you read an article about how someone snuck into some computer system and was reading all the emails and doing wire transactions and stuff like that.<\/p>\n
And you just don’t know what to do. So the first thing you really need to do is take an independent look at what risks your business faces and what is the impact of a hack would be on your business. You do that through a very structured cybersecurity assessment with someone like me who follows an industry-wide framework and go through a very detailed, in a couple of hours, mostly conversation, go through your business, see what is important to your business, where your data is stored and other things like that. And then come out with a prioritized list of what’s the most important thing to do first, second, third, fourth, etc., to protect your business. In some cases, it comes out that you really don’t need to do much of anything. In most cases, there are one or two things that you really need to take care of to protect your data and your reputation.
