You may know that one in five businesses will be subject to a ransomware or a hacking attack in any given year, but did you know that 81% of all cybercriminal attempts are against small businesses and that 97% of them are for preventable? Hi, I’m Steve Conyers with CMIT Solutions where we provide cyber security and IT services for businesses and nonprofits. And today I’d like to talk to you about three of our 15 most important actions that you as a business owner can take to help reduce your risk of being attacked by cyber criminals. First one I want to talk about today is email protection. Most cyber-attacks are through emails, through links that are sent in emails and your best protection against that is to not actually get any emails that you shouldn\u2019t be getting in the first place.<\/p>\n
So you put in some filters that reduce the emails that you get. The second one is the complexity of your passwords. A lot of people, because it’s just easier to do, repeatedly use the same passwords on different sites. And if any one of them gets compromised or known by a hacker or as easily guessed, they just take that password and your idea and go to many different sites trying to get in. So a password manager that can create complex passwords and fill them in for you is a great way to work around that. And the third thing I want to talk about today is advanced endpoint detection and response. We probably all know about anti malware and anti-spam programs that run on your computer. But what you may not know is that there are much more sophisticated tools now that actually look at activity on your computer and can predict and detect and stop malignant actions on your computer. The type of actions that are typical of a hacker who’s actively working on your computer.
