Philadelphia is putting more of its public spaces online. According to Technical.ly (LINK), 172 city sites—including recreation centers and other municipal buildings—now have broadband connections, with the remaining sites in the initial project targeted for completion by the end of 2026. Free public Wi-Fi is great for access, but it also puts a familiar small-business question in the spotlight: when your people work from a café, community space, or client site, how do you keep their devices and company data safe? The answer starts with secure devices, strong sign-ins, and clear rules for accessing business systems away from the office.

Meanwhile, the region is asking harder questions about the machinery behind AI. On Wednesday, Mayor Cherelle Parker ordered a task force to study whether Philadelphia needs new rules for hyperscale data centers; its report is due by June 30, 2027. The mayor emphasized that no such project is currently being built in the city, while advocates who want a moratorium say the review is too slow. The Philadelphia Inquirer (LINK) has the latest. Just west of town, WHYY reported (LINK) that Upper Merion supervisors rejected a proposed five-building data-center campus near King of Prussia in August. The takeaway for businesses is practical, not political: the cloud has a physical footprint, and it pays to understand your providers’ resilience, recovery plans, and costs before you depend on them for critical work.

There is also encouraging news from Chester County. Exton-based Bentley Systems has opened a 22,000-square-foot Center City technology hub bringing Bentley and Cesium teams together, with space for roughly 150 engineering, technology, and business employees, VISTA.Today reports (LINK). It is a nice reminder that the region’s innovation economy is not confined to one ZIP code. For growing local firms, the same challenge appears at a smaller scale: people, applications, and data have to work smoothly and securely across multiple offices and wherever the team happens to be that day.

And the network itself is getting an upgrade. Philadelphia-based Comcast Business announced a collaboration with Equinix, (LINK) designed to let eligible enterprise customers order last-mile Ethernet connectivity through software, with the goal of shrinking delivery from weeks to days. It is early-stage and aimed at enterprises, not a promise that every small office gets instant fiber. Still, it is a useful signal: connectivity is becoming more flexible, while the need to plan bandwidth, security, and backup connections before an expansion remains decidedly old-fashioned—in the best way.
