What\u2019s the one app you couldn\u2019t live without?<\/p>\n
Microsoft\u2019s latest marketing says the answer should be Microsoft Copilot.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re calling it the number one productivity app in Windows 11, ahead of tools like File Explorer, Microsoft To Do and even the trusty Snipping Tool.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s quite a statement.<\/p>\n
Now, I do understand why they\u2019re saying it.<\/p>\n
There\u2019s a big push around AI PCs at the moment, and Copilot is front and center of that story.<\/p>\n
It sits on your desktop and promises to help you think, plan and get things done. You can ask it to summarize long emails, turn messy notes into a checklist, draft messages, or help you organize ideas for a project.<\/p>\n
And yes, that can be genuinely helpful.<\/p>\n
If you\u2019ve ever opened your inbox to find a long, winding email thread, being able to pull out the key points quickly is a relief.<\/p>\n
If you\u2019ve scribbled half-formed ideas into a document, having something help you structure them can save time.<\/p>\n
But here\u2019s where I struggle with the \u201cnumber one\u201d label.<\/p>\n
When I look at how most businesses work, the heavy lifting is done by other tools.<\/p>\n
File Explorer is used constantly. It\u2019s how you find client documents, move files, organize folders and keep everything in order. You don\u2019t think about it much, but you rely on it all day.<\/p>\n
The same goes for task apps like Microsoft To Do, or simple tools that let you grab screenshots and share information quickly.<\/p>\n
They\u2019re not flashy. They don\u2019t get keynote speeches. But they\u2019re woven into the fabric of your working day.<\/p>\n
Copilot feels different. It\u2019s more like an assistant sitting alongside those tools. It helps you process information and draft content, but it doesn\u2019t replace the core systems underneath.<\/p>\n
I suspect this ranking says more about Microsoft\u2019s strategy than about real-world usage. They want AI to be seen as the future of productivity, so it makes sense to position Copilot at the top of the list.<\/p>\n
From a business owner\u2019s perspective, though, the more useful question isn\u2019t \u201cWhat does Microsoft say is number one?\u201d It\u2019s \u201cWhere do we waste time?\u201d<\/p>\n
If your team spends hours writing, summarizing or planning, Copilot could make a noticeable difference.<\/p>\n
If the real problem is disorganized files, unclear processes or too many manual steps, then no AI assistant is going to fix that on its own.<\/p>\n
AI is becoming part of everyday work, and that\u2019s not a bad thing. Just don\u2019t let the marketing decide what productivity looks like in your business.<\/p>\n
The best tool is still the one that solves your biggest daily headache.<\/p>\n
