Remember the day you started your business? I remember it well…fear and excitement fueled me.\u00a0 I wanted to be an instant success, but I knew it would take time and perseverance.\u00a0I was ready to work hard \u2013 to put my heart and soul into the business.\u00a0 And, I did.\u00a0 And, no I wasn\u2019t an instant success \u2013 it did take time.\u00a0 But, now I have what many would call a very successful business.\u00a0 A wonderful staff of technicians \u201cdo the work.\u201d\u00a0 I am no longer the chief bottle washer.\u00a0 I work more \u201con the business\u201d than \u201cin it.\u201d\u00a0 I can lead, I can manage the business.\u00a0 Meet with my clients, enjoy a little flex time.\u00a0 All the things I hoped for.\u00a0 And, the business is still growing.<\/p>\n
But wait.\u00a0 Is that true?\u00a0 Then, why did I just spend 3 hours working on my website?\u00a0 Why was yesterday spent paying bills?\u00a0 Oh, and tomorrow I have to update my marketing database.\u00a0 Why me?\u00a0 Is that the best use of my time?\u00a0 Probably not. But it is important.\u00a0 And, while I don\u2019t worry about the IT in my business (as that is my business and I do have a staff of highly skilled IT technicians who can do that for me), I do still get wrapped up in the weeds spending far more time than I am ready to admit here on things that frankly, someone else can do better than me!\u00a0 Why?\u00a0 Because right now, at this moment, it has to get done\u2026and it takes far more time for me to identify possible resources, interview and hire them, train them, etc\u2026.oh and then I have to pay them too!<\/p>\n
So, how do I judge when it is time to remove a hat?\u00a0 And, which hat should I get rid of?\u00a0 And, who is going to wear the hat \u2013 an existing employee?\u00a0 Nope, not mine \u2013 they are all focused on delivering our client services. \u00a0I could hire \u2013 in fact I did\u2026but I didn\u2019t have full time work and they eventually left for another company that did.\u00a0 And, so I am back to square one \u2013 8 months invested in training someone to wear some of my hats and she\u2019s gone.\u00a0 Start over again?\u00a0 Ugh!\u00a0 I\u2019m thinking now that outsourcing might be a better option.\u00a0 Sure, there is still some training involved\u2026but if I outsource to the right company then they know how to do the things I do today (and probably a lot better than I do).\u00a0 And, I just need to teach them a little about what makes my company special.\u00a0 Hmmm\u2026. This may work.<\/p>\n
Yes, I still have to pay them. And, yes, they cost more than I budgeted.\u00a0 But, do they really give me back more of my own time?\u00a0 And, do they do it better than I could?\u00a0 I think that is the question.\u00a0 If someone can do it better than me, isn\u2019t it time for me to give up the hat?\u00a0 Ooooh\u2026but that is giving up control\u2026isn\u2019t it?\u00a0 I like control.\u00a0 But, I gotta try it.\u00a0 To get my business to the next level will take focus \u2013 I don\u2019t have the time to do everything. \u00a0And, besides, I need to do it better.\u00a0 OK, time to let go of a hat!<\/p>\n
