And yet you could not justify hiring a full-time<\/span> IT person<\/span><\/a> for it.<\/span> You would be paying a salary for a part-time workload, and you would struggle to keep that person interested. So in most businesses in this position, the work quietly lands on whoever is most willing, on top of the job they were actually hired to do.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is a<\/span> capacity problem<\/span><\/a>. It is not a competence problem, and the distinction matters, because the people carrying it almost always assume the opposite.<\/span><\/p>\n

What “our go-to” actually means<\/b><\/h2>\n

When Brandi describes the arrangement, she does not talk about technology at all. She talks about reach.<\/span><\/p>\n

“They are always just a phone call away, and they are our go-to, because we really rely on them heavily.”<\/span><\/p>\n

That is the whole thing, and it is worth sitting with, because it is what almost every operations leader tells us when we ask what they were actually shopping for. Not a feature list. Not a stack. Somebody reachable, who already knows their setup, and who will not make them feel foolish for asking.<\/span><\/p>\n

Technical competence is assumed. It is the price of entry, not the differentiator. What gets weighed is whether these are people you want dealing with your business for the next several years, at nine on a Friday night when the card reader stops talking to the network.<\/span><\/p>\n

What the arrangement actually covers<\/b><\/h2>\n

Brandi lists it herself: the computer networking, the security,<\/span> the backups<\/span><\/a>, the firewalls, and, in her words, anything that is IT related.<\/span><\/p>\n

That is worth noticing for what it leaves out. She does not describe a project that finished. She describes a set of things that are simply handled on an ongoing basis, which is exactly the sort of work that has no completion date and therefore never survives being somebody’s side job.<\/span><\/p>\n

What changes for a business in this position is rarely dramatic. Technology does not become interesting. It becomes something nobody at the property has to think about, which is a hard outcome to put in a report and the one they actually wanted.<\/span><\/p>\n

The eight-year part matters more than the story<\/b><\/h2>\n

Any provider can show you a client who is happy in year one. Year one is easy. Everyone is attentive, the problems are fresh, the relationship is new.<\/span><\/p>\n

Eight years is a different claim. <\/span>Eight years means the arrangement survived staff turnover on both sides, several<\/span> rounds of equipment<\/span><\/a> reaching the end of its life, at least one serious change in how payments get processed, and every ordinary Tuesday in between.<\/span> It also means somebody, at some point in a budget conversation, almost certainly asked whether this line item was still necessary, and the answer kept being yes.<\/span><\/p>\n
