A restaurant client called us because the owner was frustrated. Orders kept getting lost, and every vendor he called swore their piece of the puzzle was fine. What nobody had actually checked was internal network design, the layer that decides whether data moving around a building actually gets where it is going.
Before he called us, he had already gone down the obvious list of suspects. He called his internet provider, and the internet provider said the connection was fine. He called his point of sale vendor, and the POS vendor said the system was fine. The TVs and the music streaming through the dining room never had a hiccup. Every piece, checked individually, came back clean. And orders kept getting lost.
Why Internal Network Design Matters More Than Internet Speed
The restaurant had a fairly typical setup: an ISP-provided router handling wifi for the whole building, plus a consumer extender bolted on later to reach a dining room at the far end that the router alone could never cover. On paper, that should have solved the coverage gap. In practice, it created a worse one.
Handheld devices, the ones servers use to fire orders straight to the kitchen printer, are supposed to move freely around a restaurant floor and hand off cleanly from one access point to the next as a server walks the room. Consumer extenders are not built for that kind of hand-off. A device that first connects near the original router tends to keep clinging to that same weak, distant signal even after it wanders into range of the extender, instead of switching to the stronger connection sitting right next to it. The result is a device sitting at the ragged edge of a signal that can barely carry data, all night, every night.
That is where the lost orders came from. Some never printed at all. Others printed late, right in the middle of a rush. It was hectic. Orders were getting lost. Staff was frustrated, and so were customers.
What a Properly Designed Commercial Network Fixed
We replaced the setup with a commercial network built around access points designed to hand devices off to each other the way the restaurant actually needed, so a server carrying an order pad never has to fight to hold on to a fading signal. That same system let us separate traffic that had all been dumped onto one shared network before: point of sale on its own lane, kitchen and other connected devices on another, guest wifi walled off from both, so a customer streaming a show at their table could never compete with a ticket trying to print.
The number that stuck with the owner was the bandwidth. In that distant dining room, a handheld device would show a strong connection, full signal, and still barely pull ten megabits down and ten up. The signal looked fine. The network behind it was not.
He had already upgraded to a bigger plan with his internet provider before he called us, hoping more raw speed would solve it. It did not, and in hindsight, he never actually needed the upgrade. The bandwidth was not the problem. What it moved through, once it got inside the building, was. Only after we redesigned the internal network did the building actually see close to eight hundred down and fifty up, the same plan he had already been paying for, finally distributed the way it should have been from the start.
The Same Logic Applies to Any Office Network
The same logic applies to an office, not just a restaurant. We looked at one recently that was paying for a plan running several hundred megabits down and forty up, a solid connection by any standard. Every device on it was funneling through a single Cat5 patch cord, a cable that caps out around a hundred megabits down regardless of what the plan promised. They were not heavy users, so nobody ever noticed the ceiling. They had simply been paying every month for bandwidth that never had a path to reach them.
If something in your office feels slow or unreliable, the instinct is to call the provider and pay for more. The problem you are experiencing may not be caused by the ISP. It may be caused by a network that is not in balance. It is exactly the kind of thing a managed IT provider should be catching before you ever notice, not after.
