Dark Web Research

In today’s installment in the 15 Ways to Protect Against Cyber Attack we’re addressing Dark Web Research.  This is honestly one of the easiest ways to improve your chances of not getting hacked: get someone to check the Dark Web for your credentials and other info. It’s crazy effective, and very inexpensive. By contributing a few bucks a month to a good provider, they will scan dark web nooks and crannies to see if your information (your actual information) is out there for hackers to see and use.  A lot of companies are stunned to find what’s out there.

Just last year, a reporter for Cybersecurity Dive quoted Marsh McLennan as saying, “Organizations that are mentioned in dark web market listings are more than twice as likely to experience an attack.”  This makes sense, right?  If you or your employees have credentials listed where hackers can go review them, why wouldn’t they try them out on your organization?  That’s just too easy.

But searching the dark web is not for the ill-prepared. Just getting into some of the nooks and crannies where this stuff lives can actually leave you exposed to attack. This is definitely a topic in which you want to have “people for that”. Wouldn’t you want to know if your Instagram credentials become available to hackers online? Once you know, you can change your password. If you don’t know, you’re that much more vulnerable.

Naturally, it’s not sufficient to do this research just once.  We recommend a paid subscription so that as more and more things end up on the Dark Web, you’re continually protected by the active monitoring being done on your behalf.

Dark Web Research is just one of the many ways in which CMIT Solutions can help make you and your business better protected against ransomware and cyber security threats.
