Cold medicine from last winter. Vitamins you bought in bulk. Half a bottle of cough syrup. A prescription that expired months ago. 😅 Plenty of medicine in there, but a full cabinet has never meant anyone was healthy.
Plenty of businesses build their cybersecurity the same way, and I don’t blame them. It happens slowly.
How the cabinet fills up
A scary headline prompts one purchase. Your insurance company requires another. A vendor recommends a third. Each choice made sense on the day you made it.
Then a few years pass, and nobody can say how it all fits together.
The myth I hear most? “More tools means better protection.” It’s an easy assumption. If one product adds protection, two must add more.
Here’s the truth: it’s not about owning more protection. It’s about owning protection that works together. Extra layers help when each has a clear job. Without that, you get overlap, complexity and a false sense of safety. 😬
Your immune system isn’t a shelf of pills
Your body doesn’t rely on a pile of random remedies. It runs a coordinated system that recognizes problems and responds to them.
Your security should do the same. Your tools should complement each other. Your people should know what you expect of them. And when something suspicious happens, there should be a clear plan for what comes next. </soapbox>
Let me be clear: buying another product won’t fix a coordination problem. I’ve seen businesses spend more and more and feel less and less sure. Tools matter, but they do their best work as part of a bigger plan that fits how you actually run your business.
Give your security a check-up
You don’t need to understand every product your company runs.
You do need clear answers to four questions:
- What are we using, and why? Someone on your team or a trusted partner should explain what each major protection does. If nobody can, that’s your first clue.
- Where do we overlap, and where are the gaps? Overlap isn’t always bad. Sometimes it’s on purpose. The question is whether you designed it or it just piled up.
- Who makes sure it’s all working? A tool can send alerts all day, but that doesn’t help if nobody reads them. Someone needs to own the outcome.
- When did we last re-evaluate? People come and go. New apps show up. Your protection should fit the business you run today, not the one you ran three years ago.
Which of those four could you answer confidently right now? If the honest answer is “none,” you’re in good company. 😊
You don’t have to do this alone
Most small businesses I talk to aren’t careless. They’re under-protected because nobody ever stepped back to look at the full picture. That’s tough to do from the inside.
That’s where we come in. We help you sort out what you already have, trim the overlap and find the gaps. Then we check whether it still fits your business and your risks.
Let’s take a look together
If any of this hit a little close to home, I’d love to help. No pitch, no pressure. Just a friendly 15-minute conversation about where you stand.
