Without Adobe Creative Cloud, Final Cut Pro, Keynote or whatever your tool of choice is, you simply can’t get your work done. However, accessing your work, whether in the office or on the move, is a key part of being productive……
A stew of data….
Creative people identify very closely with their tools of the trade, and in that IT is no exception. But in the pursuit of creative freedom (meaning allowing your team to store their work in their file storage medium of choice) it is easy to get into a storage and file system mess. There are many excellent products our there, but without a file storage strategy it is easy to actually hinder productivity rather than enhance it.
The first task is to have a folder and file naming convention that makes it easy to locate the right file in the first place. Second is to have a versioning mechanism so that you can track and identify progress, and if necessary go back to previous incarnations of a file or document. Finally, you need a collaboration mechanism to ensure the right eyes are on the work.
On prem, or in the Cloud?
As information technology develops, there are always new paradigms that challenge the old world order. Mainframes gave way to mini-computers, which gave way to Unix which gave way to Windows servers.
Today, it is the evolution away from an on-premise computer infrastructure to the agility of cloud computing. If you were starting your business today, would you want to be managing servers, hard-wired networks, backups, security protection software etc. or leave that to others?
The fact is that there is no one “right” answer for everyone. In many cases a hybrid approach can deliver significant benefits.
For example, if your files are huge, the speed of a local network may outweigh the flexibility of the cloud.
The good news though, is that with cloud synchronization from companies like Synology, you can have the best of both worlds and enjoy local access to documents, with the simplicity of managing a cloud based environment.
A responsive file approach is a real asset to a creative agency, and we can help you define and implement the right mix of inhouse and cloud based technologies.
