The End Is Near for Windows 7!

Microsoft will end support for the Windows 7 operating system on January, 14, 2020, meaning they will no longer issue security patches or updates to the program. Windows 7 will continue to work, if you do not choose to upgrade now.

The biggest concern will be a lack of future security patches and updates, making Windows 7 vulnerable to malware and cybersecurity risk. Moving forward, no further security updates or patches will be issued by Microsoft. This means that tech support will not be able to assist you with a technical issue with your Windows 7 after January 14, 2020.

In general, any equipment more than three years old should probably be replaced. Newer systems can be upgraded safely. This scenario will be different for each business, with several factors — computing speed needs, graphic capabilities, hard drive requirements, and more — coming in to play.

Regulated industries are required to use supported hardware in order to be in compliance. If you are working in a regulated industry, and still using Windows 7, let us know and we will guide you through the upgrade process.

Advanced planning with your IT professional is key. Navigating the impending end of life deadline for Windows 7 will require a smart strategy that takes cost, time, and security into consideration.

Conducting an assessment of your company’s current infrastructure is the key first step to identifying any coming vulnerabilities.

Other key components to consider:

  • Identify machines that need to be upgraded or replaced
  • Identify legacy software that runs on older operating systems
  • Develop a timeline for any upgrades or replacements
  • Isolate any systems that will continue to run Windows 7 from other secure machines
  • Plan for necessary employee training

A: There is no in place upgrade for Windows 10.

Q: What is involved with updating my existing hardware to Window 10?

A: if the hardware is compatible, you can purchase a Windows 10 Pro license from Microsoft (cost $199), install it (1 hour labor). Once that is done you have a “refreshed machine”, you’ll need to install your programs, migrate your data and configure Windows and application settings for your organization.
