Community Highlights: Meet Deepesh, CEO of CMIT Solutions Silver Spring

Today we’d like to introduce you to Deepesh.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?

If I have to talk about “My Story” as we humans expect to hear:

I started as a “Science” student in High school. Did my bachelor’s degree in Economics ( ‘Arts’ career stream, as they call it in India), but then ended up becoming a Chartered Accountant (the third career stream, during those times in India – called Commerce). But it didn’t stop there. I moved to Dubai to work for Ernst and Young after being recruited from India. Then came marriage. Being from an Air Force family, my wife also came from the same background. From E&Y I went into doing Finance & Accounting for a local travel group of companies. We had our first daughter then. Finding the Finance world really dry and all post-mortem work, I decided to take up an opportunity that showed up in IT. Of Course! I had done a course in Systems and computer programming right after my CA training. I guess being a science student at heart did have an impact on my livelihood. Running a software division managing a US-based ERP solution for an IT company in Dubai got me to the US. A US-based HO of a competitor in Dubai wanted me to set up a similar practice in the US. I landed in the US right when the Tech bubble burst. And during that transition, we had our second daughter. A couple of years later, I found myself getting into IT consulting. Change is the only constant, they say! So in a few years, I switched to the other side of the table and jumped into Corporate America. This time, I was running IT teams for large billion-dollar corporations.

So while this ‘story’ was going on, I was discovering ‘life’ or as I call it ‘Living’, in parallel. There was something in the genes, I guess, and it was enhanced when I lived with my maternal grandparents while pursuing my CA. My grandfather was a ‘Spiritual Guru,’ and he led his disciples in the path of ‘Kriya-yoga’. Every weekend, there would be meditation and related sessions, and instead of participating and learning, I would be the organizer of Prasad and the chief of seating arrangements for all the attendees. I liked what went on, but I was more intrigued by it than interested. I even asked my grandfather about it. And he, in his wise tone, responded, “Don’t worry about it. It will happen if and when the time comes”. So, I left it there, and years/decades passed until I heard about Kriya-Yoga in USA. (Only to find out later that my grandfather was one of the original founders of this movement but had decided to not be a part of its propagation and focus on his local community.) I got initiated and recruited into the process. It went on for a few months, when I realized that I am not that structured a person to follow the rigor. Years passed again. One day I heard about ‘Inner Engineering’. Sounded interesting and more technical than spiritual. So I took on the course. The ‘concepts’ it talked about were very helpful to get me thinking deeper. It had a set of physical, breathing(Pranayams) and chants to be done daily. Which were supposed to transform. I wasn’t sure of what it would transform. But I got into the routine and did it with dedication and consistency. In a few months I found that the institution had a really tough training course called ‘Shoonya’. 4 days, onsite, body and mind-bending, 6 am to 10 pm rigor daily. It also had a preparation requirement for pranayams etc. Anyway, I was already into this path. So whatever comes in the way I was game. I had to get special permission to attend as I have a knee issue and cannot bend it completely, when this course required sitting on folded knees (vajrasana) for all the 4 days. As I said I had decided. I completed it.

Thought that I had all the tools and techniques and also the will to pursue a path that would lead to “Self-Realization”, Nirvana, Moksha…. Call it what you want! Supposed to be the ultimate ‘Success’ for a human in this universe. Two and a half years of rigorous, sincere, dedicated effort. Practicing all the rituals, spending over 2 hours every day.

Since we are talking about this side of life, I should also mention the projects on the physical side of things. Fasting. Did a calorie count using an app for around 6 to 8 months. Found that on average, we eat over 3,000 calories when trying to count 2,000. It was too much pressure on the digestive system. So, I started IF. 16-8. Stop eating at 8 PM and break the fast at 12 noon with lunch. Felt great! But being a non-vegetarian in an essentially vegetarian family. I always had that conflict – why can we eat plants and vegetables and not animals?? Is it just because they cannot scream and shout like animals? Or is there more? So, then I came to find out about the effects of animal protein on the human body. Well, becoming a vegan made sense. Blood work numbers changed dramatically. It’s been around 6 years now.

But mentally, the spirituality path was still not making sense. Too much work with no understanding or sight of the goal. No one to provide real hard evidence and explanations of what this ’ Human Experience ’ is all about. Why do we live and do and pursue and chase! etc etc.

Corporate America was already taking its toll by that time. M&A, PE companies, follow your boss from one company to another. Act as if you are the boss when the reality is that, even being a VP, you have 3 more layers of bosses above you. Even though they are not the ultimate boss, as they have a Board above them. So, it’s never about the content of work. It’s about fitting the content into what the mandate is from the Board. Now go tell this, sell this to the 150-person team reporting to you. Show off that you have a yearly budget of $26 Million, but it’s already allocated from the top. Bottom line…….. ‘Corporate’ and I were not getting along. So I handled the one last merger and walked out. Thank you! I don’t know what I am doing next, but I certainly know what I am not doing anymore in this life.

6 months of daily walks around the nearby Centennial Lake. Watching and hearing conversations of some so-called spiritual people. Writing around a hundred articles on “Human Technology,” as I understand it. Ultimately, realizing that there is no Nirvana. It’s so obvious and has been right in front of us all our lives… It’s SELF-REALIZATION. It’s a realization. It needs self-discovery. It is about knowing yourself and not asking others to read your book. Read it yourself. All the answers are there.
That was freedom. No conflicts. No fears. No books, no reading. Just experience the NOW!

Life is “Now”. It is already happening, so we are either “Living” or not. Because yesterday has gone and tomorrow is not guaranteed, I live every moment in the now! Being ‘engaged’ in living is “The Responsibility”; Searching for happiness or overcoming sorrow keeps humanity chasing rainbows and not actually ‘living’.

This independence took away the fear and allowed me to get into my own business. No chase to become a billion-dollar enterprise. But live in the moment and stay focused with all the energy on getting the customers what they need. We keep our customers safe and operational. All my experience in Finance, Technology and business allows us to tell our customers and prospects:

“Leave IT to us! You have business to run.”

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?

A lot of the people around me, relatives, friends, and colleagues, would say I have had my struggles. And probably in the world of ‘doing’ it wasn’t a smooth road. Mainly, because they saw me jumping around from one thing to another. And I don’t blame them because no one can see inside the other person. We all go by what we see someone doing and draw our conclusions. But my answer would be that whether it was ‘doing’ or ‘living’ I travelled a growth path that has been fulfilling, smooth, and where I am today would not have been possible without having taken this road.
It is said hindsight is 20/20. But I actually never had any conflict in my mind when I was jumping around. To me, it was all very normal and sequential. And since I have had the self-realization, it all makes true sense. Doing something of my own was always the undertone in all my jobs. To the extent that a number of my friends would always ask me when I am starting my entrepreneurial journey.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?

What matters most to you? Why?

So when it comes to “what matters most”, my answer would be “nothing”.
Let’s understand this by going to the part right in the beginning of “my story” where I said, “as we humans expect to hear”. I call that part “Doing”. And then in the next paragraph, I talked about “Living”. Living as I said earlier is “Now”. It is happening all the time. It is the part that is happening and will happen “Forever”( I can explain this in another session) ‘Doing’ is what we ‘have’ to do in order to ‘Live’. It is always a subset of living.

So when we talk about what matters most. It always relates to ‘Doing’. And the part that creates a conflict and why I say ‘nothing’ matters is because of the word ‘Most’. Nothing matters most. Doing doesn’t matter at all. We do only to live and it is limited to what is required to live. Which also means that ‘Everything matters’. It’s not a question of most or least. In life, everything matters: to the extent that when one is living (in the Now), everything matters. Not just doing something that we think matters most. Being engaged a 100% in what we do, when we do it, is what matters. And this is the essence of living. Being in the Now!

When it comes to what we do as CMIT Solutions, it is about securing our customers’ business. In today’s world, where cybercrime is all around us, it’s not about what businesses have to pay as an expense or cost. It is about how much should be paid to secure and protect the business. It’s paying for managing the risk of losing one’s business.
