IT’S A CERTAINTY — DISASTER WILL STRIKE

But not having a plan in place for a computer disaster can throw your business into chaos should an unexpected event strike. Downtime is costly, and it affects customers.

The average downtime cost is reported at $163,674 per hour according to a study conducted by Aberdeen. Putting the proper plan and technologies in place, however, will alleviate worries and mitigate the negative impact of an unexpected event that takes place.

What Should a Disaster Recovery Plan Include?

There are many different aspects of an effective disaster recovery plan for business owners, but here are a few to consider:

  • DATA BACKUP.
  • OFF-SITE STORAGE OF REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT, SHOULD YOU REQUIRE IT.
  • INSURANCE THAT COVERS ANY TECHNOLOGY DAMAGES.
  • DETAILED PLAN FOR PERSONNEL.
  • LIST OF PEOPLE IN THE ORGANIZATION AND HOW TO REACH THEM.

All aspects of disaster recovery are important; however, since data is the lifeblood of your company, it’s important to invest extra energy in this area. Regular backups are essential, as they allow for quick restoration during an unplanned event. A few more ways to keep your data safe include the following items:

Monitored on-site and off-site data backup. By having a combination of both, your data will be safe and secure during an unplanned event.

Monitored disk image backup. Having this in place will drastically reduce the amount of time it takes to rebuild.

Original installation disks for your computers. This should include OS, drivers and any OEM software. Having these available will make it more efficient and less time-consuming to get back up and running.

A detailed plan for what to do when you’re without a machine. For example, can you work on another machine, do you have an iPad available or are there other resources that will keep you up and running?

Developing a disaster recovery plan is time-consuming up front, but a well-crafted plan delivers not only a speedy recovery but will also assist you being able to serve your customers better during a chaotic time. And by doing so, you’ll position your company to be even stronger in the future.
