GRANBY — After years in the corporate world perfecting his trade as an information technology expert, Paul Marzo has settled down in Granby and opened up his own area firm in Hartford, working with small and medium-sized businesses.
Marzo recalled working with computers back to his high school days, saying his father was into computers.
“I would work on my old Commodore 64 computer,” said Marzo. “I would write programs at my high school for other students.”
He would move on to college at Clemson in South Carolina and obtained a degree in mathematics with a minor in computer science.
Marzo said he would start by working with Electronic Data Systems, working on application development and custom solutions for companies. He would eventually become an information technology consultant, doing work for insurance companies.
“I traveled all over the place, from Denver and Los Angeles to Dallas to Washington, D.C.,” said Marzo.
More recently, Marzo decided to exit the insurance field in favor of entering the IT field as a business owner. He opened up CMIT Solutions of Hartford, a branch office of the CMIT company. CMIT has offices in several areas in Connecticut, including an office in Stamford.
Marzo said he has a group of three local technicians to assist his clients, but the networking provided by CMIT allows him to pool more resources when needed.
“That’s the key thing for the businesses,” said Marzo. “We have people local and we also have a dedicated help desk for our customers to utilize, and other resources we can access if we need them.”
Marzo and his team provide computer assistance for small and medium-sized businesses from 10 to 150 employees. Their purpose is to ensure businesses have computer systems that are optimized and perform to their fullest potential.
“For example,” he said. “We had a company call us and ask for a new software system and new computers to use that software. Our people go in and install the computer and software and complete all the networking to make sure the system works in harmony.”
He said his staff also works at providing solutions to problems. When software won’t work or there are virus issues, he and his staff work to come up with a solution to the problem, and provide ongoing monitoring to ensure the problem does not occur again.
“We look to provide a wholistic view of the problem and fix it one time,” said Marzo. “We make sure all the components of a computer system work and provide ongoing monitoring.”
After so many years of working with bigger businesses, the work in smaller businesses has been much more satisfying for Marzo, who lives in in Granby his wife and four children.
“With the larger corporations, you don’t usually see that end result of the customer being happy,” said Marzo. “With CMIT, you get the satisfaction of bringing a frustrated customer to a happy solution.”
He emphasized that it is his job to make sure technology works well for people.
“Technology should service businesses,” said Marzo. “Not be a distraction.”
